Sapodilla Allergy!

Whenever my mom has a bite of sapodilla, she has some sort of an allergic reaction [or thats what we think] and her ears start itching! Lol! A teeny-weeny piece of the fruit is enough to irritate her ears! Have you ever heard of anything like that? If you have, do let me know, coz my mom is really worried that something is wrong with her! :P

I've heard of dust allergy, pollen allergy, nickel allergy, milk allergy, insect-bite allergy and other normal types of allergy.. but I had never heard of an allergy caused by a fruit, leave alone sapodilla!

My mom wanted to test if it was something to do with the cheeku, or it was some other sort of reaction. So we went to this place called Delifresh that sells fresh fruit ice creams with no preservatives and all that stuff. She tried out the cheeku ice cream.. and you guessed right, her ear-itching started again!!

She went to the ENT and got herself checked. The doctor said there was nothing to worry about and it was just some sort of a cheeku allergy. But she's not convinced.. coz she has never heard of such an allergy from anybody!

Sapodilla,Cheeku,Sapota,Safeda.. call it what you may, but the fact is this: my mom's ears don't like them! I know it's nothing serious, and so whenever this happens, I can't stop laughing! My dad has a different viewpoint though; he says it's all psychological, just to irritate her.. hehe..Poor mom! :P

hehe. I've never heard of cheeku allergy! And allergy in the form of itchy ears! Only heard of nut allergy but symptoms are generally swollen tongue and all. So its quite possible that there is an allergic reaction to cheeku. do you remember the botany we learnt at school? didnt they mention nuts were fruits or something like that? Cant remember.
Itchy ears!!! Cool symptom! ;) Atleast its nothing painful so thank God! Dont pick on ur mum too much though! :P

I was wondering for the first few minutes what the hell "sapodilla" was. I swear, this is the first time I've heard cheeku called by that name. Hee, now I can't stop thinking about armadillos. No connection - just that they almost rhyme. :P

Eh, just ignore this comment, it's pretty pointless :D

When I was searching for "sapodilla allergy" in Google, I came across your blog about this subject. Actually, any person can be allergic to anything under the sun. There are lots of people who are allergic to fruits like apple, banana, kiwi fruit, lychee, orange, plum, etc. Your mom should not worry too much about it, because it is not life-threatening. However, she should be careful, because some allergic reactions are very severe.
A few years back we did some research on sapodilla allergy in Mysore, India, and we have come across 7 cases of allergy to sapodilla in Mysore. We have published our preliminary work on 3 cases of oral allergy syndrome to sapodilla in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, September 2002, vol. 110, pages 533-534. Mostly this fruit causes what is known as oral allergy syndrome, the symptoms being confined to the facial and pharyngeal areas. So, it is not surprising that your mother has itching in her ears. It is quite possible. If you can provide me your email, I will be happy to send a copy of the published report as a fulltext attachment.

This is an old posting but as I googled, I found this blog. I am a sapodilla allergic sufferer. It developed when I was 26 years old. I was okay before that but got it after 6 years of not consuming it. No cure, just avoid it.

I am a chikoo allerigic person, which I realised when I was 25 years old. Since then I notice everytime I eat a small piece also, immediately I develop small blisters all over my mouth. I take an anti allergic tablet and it gets ok . If I dont , it gets worse and continues forever.

I develop acute stomach cramps as soon as I consume sapodilla. I've asked my family physician about it and he says sapodilla allergy isn't uncommon. The best way to avoid it is to avoid eating the fruit.

For many years throughout my childhood my lips would always swell up on eating sapota. Always. My mom convinced me it was bits from ants who were still on the fruit, and so I persisted to eat them cos they are so Delish :D I am still a little allergic to the skin of the fruit.. having just the flesh or as part of shakes and ice creams doesn't lead to a reaction.
